Chapter 11 2022

Last chapter we saw ‘Uncle’ Laurie hitting the classifieds to peddle his wares, Change.org offered a sobering reality check regarding the influence these people actually have outside the 50 odd members, and a war of words erupted with a Land Council. ‘Uncle’ Laurie got himself in the newspaper.

26/01/2022

On January 26 2022, referred to by many Aboriginal People as Invasion Day, Survival Day, and considered a day of mourning, self proclaimed ‘Uncle’ and ‘Elder’ of the Garigal and/or GuriNgai Neil Evers, holds an annual Bike Ride with ‘Aboriginal People‘.

At the same time as Neil Evers was recognising Invasion Day with a Bike Ride, the rest of the GuriNgai were holding an altogether different event, in which hundreds of non-Aboriginal People trampled over an area some of the GuriNgai occasionally hold as ‘sacred’ in accordance with the pseudo-Aboriginal teachings of Goolabeen.

The gathering featured a smoking ceremony, didgeridoo playing and speeches by local ‘Aboriginal elders’ such as Uncle Laurie Bimson, and Aunty Tracey Howie.

Recent GuriNgai addition Paul Craig used this opportunity to announce publicly that he too is now a descendant of Bungaree.

Local press covering the event featured Paul heavily, wherein the following is attributed to him:

(Paul)Craig said Darkinjung Land Council does not represent the descendants of Bungaree.

“Our people, known as the Guringai, fully acknowledge the Darkinjung people who inhabited the western part of the Central Coast,” he said.

“The Guringai and Darkinjung came together to protect Kariong Sacred Lands at Bambara.”

(Paul)Craig said Traditional Custodians have been in talks with Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch, and Shadow Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, David Harris, looking for their support in protecting the sacred lands and having the Guringai acknowledged as the first People of the Central Coast.

“There are hundreds of people who can prove that they are direct descendants of Bungaree.

Paul is correct that Darkinjung Land Council does not represent the descendants of Bungaree.

Unlike Paul and his comrades however Darkinjung Land Council do not claim to, and do not need to in order to use their land as they seem fit.

Paul Craig does not appear to understand that recognising and paying respect to Aboriginal People is more than acknowledging those you happen to agree with on certain issues.

Paul mentions “traditional custodians” yet if he is referring to any member of Guringai Tribal Link, there are none. Despite this, he is most likely referring to Neil Evers and Dennis Jones, Laurie Bimson and Tracey-Lee Howie.

Paul makes the claim that “there are hundreds of people who can prove that they are direct descendants of Bungaree,” he misses a key point. If he is correct (as he may well be) then what authority do the 52 members of Guringai Tribal Link have?

Paul is not a descendant of Bungaree; he is a simple man who has been taken in by the most unlikely of ‘charismatic’ leaders in the form of Tracey-Lee Howie, who is also not related to Bungaree, directly or otherwise.

If there were such a thing in Aboriginal Culture as the frankly Nazi sounding “Bloodline Custodians” (which thankfully there isn’t) it would not be these people.

Warren Whitfield continuing to not involve himself, or correct himself.

We see here one man who claims to be a Guringai Elder, an Uncle of the Guringai ‘tribe’ being instructed by another man who claims to have had no involvement since 2006.

We see Warren Whitfield now claiming to once again be uncertain of Sophy and Charlotte Ashby’s actual family connection to Bungaree.

Howie said GuriNgai people strongly objected to the wording recommended for the First Nations Accord of the Central Coast council.

“We have not been consulted on this matter…” Howie said.

“As the direct bloodline descendants of Bungaree and Matora, we are the only First Nations People of the Central Coast region to successfully satisfy the stringent Native Title Registration Test and have repeatedly proven our bloodline to be authentic and true, of the Central Coast region.

“It has been proven repeatedly that we are culturally and linguistically different from the Darginoong, not to be mistaken with the term ‘Darkinjung’ used for the purposes of registering an Aboriginal Land Council under the NSW 1983 Aboriginal Lands Right Act,” she said.

A full list of failed Native Title attempts by the family and associates of Tracey-Lee Howie includes:

(NS06097/1998) the “Boongary Clan claim”
(NS0780120,3) the Awabakal and Guringai claim

(NS023/2005) as Awabakal.

(NS01897/2017) as Awabakal.

Remember in December last year Jeff Lawson claimed he replaced Tracey Howie, who had withdrawn from the race due to her expanding responsibilities as an Indigenous archaeologist. Now Jeff Dawson is claiming Tracey had to pull out of the election as a result of some unfortunate bullying due to her stance on some Indigenous issues, I was motivated to step in..”
Neither of these are true, and unfortunately I’m not able to reveal the true reason Tracey Howie was unable to run, as the matter may still be before the courts.

I do not know Jeffrey Lawsonhim, and have never met . However his claim that “Auntie Tracey and I are descendants of Bungaree” is false, whether Jeffrey was aware of this at the time or not. If like Tracey-Lee, Jeffrey is a a descendant along the so-called ‘Ashby line,’ then there is no evidence connecting him to any of Bungaree’s mob.

I reached out to Jeffrey on Social Media as he was on a Darug Page I am a member of. I asked is he was Tracey Howie’s cousin, to which he replied no. I asked if he still believed he was descended from Bungaree he replied yes. When I advised we must be related then, he blocked me, and appears to have left the group.

This sparked a deeper look into Jeffrey Lawson, and the discovery this was not his first run at politics, having previously run as a candidate for the One Nation Party, back in 2013.

It’s not clear when Jeff traded in Pauline Hanson for Tracey Howie, but it’s an educated guess this was a smoother lateral move than an uniformed public may have guessed.

Local Elder, Uncle Neil Evers performed a smoking ceremony, while whale songs were on the didgeridoo by Matt James, and finally the local community met on the sands of Avalon Beach to call the whales in the traditional way by squeaking their feet in the sand.

In Welcoming all to Country ‘Uncle’ Neil said:

Good morning everybody, it’s great to see so many people here.

My name is Neil Evers and I’m a descendant of the Garigal clan.

The Garigal people are part of the oldest continuing culture in the world.

I respect my Elders Past, Present and those to come.

I also acknowledged their wisdom and their courage.

I’d also like to acknowledge Living Ocean for inviting me here today and having this celebration of the whales.

Everyone here comes from this area and it’s a beautiful area to live in. did you all see the sunrise this morning?

It was absolutely magnificent, as it is every day.

I’ve lived in this area all my life, I was born at Collaroy, and to come around those (Bilgola) Bends is a beautiful experience.

To see the whales here is just fantastic.

Have you ever done any research into the statistics on whales?

I did lasty (sic) night.

When we all got up this morning – what’s the first thing we did?

That’s right – well, the whales do this too.

Do you know how much they urinate every day?

A thousand litres.

They’re a magnificent animal – they have ears – have you ever seen a whale with ears?

So how do they hear?

No; we think we’re smart as we have things on our cars which go ‘beep, beep’ when we come too close.

The whales have had this system going for thousands of years, so we’re so far behind them it’s unbelievable.

And they swim and don’t need to run.

A little later on we’re going to go down the beach and do what the old ladies did and twist our feet to make a squeaking sound. When hearing that squeak the whales and the dolphins used to come in, and they’d bring fish in.

These days it can be a bit difficult for the whales because of the incredible noise out there in the ocean. 250 years ago there were no boats out there with their huge diesel motors and the whales could hear p to 800 kilometres, so from here to Coffs Harbour.

So later on we will do as the old ones did, and help the whales.

I thank so many of you for coming today and on behalf of my elders Welcome you to this magnificent Country.
